This optical illusion was discovered by accident while creating an art image.  I do not have any theory of how it works. I have looked at some illusion sites on the web and not found anything very close to it.

The illusion lies in an expansion and contraction of the dark areas as the viewer looks about the image or scrolls up and down. Most people see this, some very strongly. A minority fail to see a strong effect.

I would describe its features thus: It has no lines or edges, but has a formless blob-like shape containing many wavelengths. The bright colors seem to be needed for the effect; it goes away if they are deleted or modified. It has fine-grained squares arising from how it was made, but if these are blurred away the effect is the same.
